The DGJRC is a non-profit, independent research institution established in honor of the late Nigerian investigative journalist, Dele Giwa. Our mission is to promote and support rigorous, ethical, and impact-driven journalism research, with a focus on investigative reporting, media freedom, and democratic accountability in Nigeria and West Africa.
Dele Giwa (1947–1986) was a prominent Nigerian journalist, editor, and co-founder of Newswatch magazine. He was known for his courageous and often controversial investigative reporting. His assassination by a letter bomb in 1986 remains a tragic landmark in Nigerian history and a symbol of the dangers faced by journalists.
While the Centre operates digitally and serves researchers globally, our main administrative office is located in the United Kingdom and a branch office in Abuja, Nigeria. We aim to engage with local Nigerian and international media communities across the country and the world.
We support research projects that are data-driven, impactful, and relevant to the current media landscape in Nigeria. This includes academic studies, practical investigative projects, public policy analyses related to the media, and historical reviews of Nigerian journalism.
Our core research themes include:
Investigative Journalism Methodologies
Media Ethics and Law
Press Freedom and Journalist Safety
The Role of Media in Nigerian Democracy and Governance
Digital Media and Misinformation/Disinformation
All DGJRC publications, reports, policy briefs, and findings from supported research are made available free of charge in our Digital Repository on the website. We are committed to open access for the public good.
Yes. We host annual Dele Giwa Memorial Lectures, workshops on media ethics, and training sessions focused on digital security and advanced investigative techniques for Nigerian journalists.
The Dele Giwa Journalism Research Centre(DGJRC) is fully funded by the Giwa family. It reflects a commitment to preserving his legacy and advancing the values of journalistic excellence, freedom, and public interest that he stood for.
